Enid YMCA Parent and Child Swimming

Parent/Child Aquatics
(ages 6 months - 2 years)

Each child has fun in the water while learning aquatic skills with parent guidance. Begins to learn basic movements such as kicking, arm strokes, and breath control based on developmental abilities of the child. A truly one-on-one water exploration provided by trained instructors.

Pre-School Aquatics (ages 3-5 years)

Offers children a first pool experience without parental assistance. They learn the basic skills that are the building blocks of swimming. Small class size of 1 instructor/6 students to allow for individual attention. Pike (beginner skill level): Students develop safe pool behavior, water adjustment and independent movement in the water. Learn basic paddle stroke and kicking skill, pool safety and proper use of floatation devices while developing comfort and confidence. Eels (intermediate skill level): For children who are comfortable in the water. Students learn to kick, dive, float, and the progressive paddle stroke. Participate in basic boating safety and use of personal floatation devices also learned. Children are able to swim across the pool with/ without individual floatation device assistance upon completion of class. Ray (advanced skill level): Review previous skills, improve skills, learn personal safety and rescue skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water. Children can swim across the pool on their back and front without assistance upon successful completion of class. Upon completion, students pass to Guppy.

Youth Swim Lessons (ages 6-12 years)

Organized on age/skill group system; allows child’s skill level to be specifically addressed. Levels contain personal growth, stroke development, water sports, games, personal safety, and rescues. With many skills to learn, it may take several sessions to pass a level. Every child learns at their own pace. Missed classes are not made up unless due to the fault of the YMCA.

Polliwog: Beginners level. Students first learning to swim may be afraid of the water, others may be uneasy about the class itself and may have had little or no experience with the water. At the polliwog level, students are introduced to pool rules, learn the back and front float; front and back paddle stroke. Students will learn how to relax and have fun in the water through water games. Safety in and around the pool, victim and danger recognition, water rescues and reaching assists will be introduced. Upon successful completion of the Polliwog class, students will progress to Guppy.

Guppy: Students build their confidence and abilities they developed in the Polliwog level. Students will learn the following: safety swim, diving safety, front and back float, front, side and back stroke paddle, diving skills, water games and various boating safety skills. Additional information about rescue skills will be introduced, such as reaching assists, throwing assists and rescue breathing. Upon successful completion the student will progress to Minnow.

Minnow: Students move from beginning to an intermediate skill level. Making more decisions, learn about goal setting, and establishing selfdiscipline. Continued development of swimming strokes, water safety and rescue skills are refined. Students are provided with additional experiences in water games, learn how to perform the conscious obstructed-airway maneuver and rescue breathing. Upon successful completion the student will progress to Fish.

Fish: As the name implies, fish are swimmers. At this level, students perfect their skills, and acquire new ones, from the elementary backstroke to basic skin diving skills. First aid orientation also becomes more sophisticated at this level. The Fish level concentrates on teamwork, going beyond swimmers’ previous individual involvement.

Enid YMCA Adult Aquacise LineAquaCardio

Water provides the most balanced environment for exercise, it is three-dimensional! The fluid resistance allows flexibility, toning and muscular strength while challenging the cardiovascular system. Exercise at your own pace. Remember to contact your physician before beginning any exercise program. Click here for days and times.

Adult Water Walking

This is very low impact, designed to strengthen muscles, increase cardiovascular health and balance. Participants move through the water with a variety of leg and arm movements. The speed at which you move dictates the amount of resistance and heart rate. At a fast pace, 30 minutes of water walking can equal two hours of walking on land!

Lap Swim

A complete schedule of the number of lanes available throughout each day is available at the front desk. Adult swimmers have priority. Members 17 and under are welcome to swim if a lane is available and youth has completed a challenge of 200 yards freestyle, 200 yards backstroke or breast stroke, and a discussion of lap lane rules and etiquette. One or two lap lanes available at most times throughout the day.
